Why Legacy Node.js GraphQL Gateways Fail Under Load

Traditional GraphQL federation gateways built on Node.js (such as Apollo Gateway) suffer from JavaScript event-loop bottlenecks when orchestrating hundreds of downstream subgraph requests. Under high query concurrency, JSON serialization overhead and garbage collection pauses drive p99 latencies past 400 milliseconds. Transitioning to Apollo Router written in Rust eliminates garbage collection spikes and handles federated query planning at raw hardware speeds.

Documented by Saizul Amin for enterprise API architects and distributed systems engineers.

Node.js Apollo Gateway vs. Rust Apollo Router

Dimension Apollo Gateway (Node.js) Apollo Router (Rust) Performance Multiplier
Throughput (QPS) 3,200 req/sec 42,000 req/sec 13x Higher
p99 Query Latency 380ms 18ms 95% Reduction
Memory Consumption 1.8 GB RAM 140 MB RAM 12x Less Memory
Garbage Collection Pauses Frequent (V8 pauses) Zero (Rust memory ownership) Predictable Latency
